Library Automation

Library Automation refers to the use of automatic machines or processing devices in
libraries. The automation may be applied to library administrative activities,
office procedures, and delivery of library services to users.

Koha is an Integrated Library System (ILS), also known as Library Management
System(LMS). Since Koha automates the card cataloging it is an Library automation
system.

Koha consists of a number of modules which cover the various aspects of running a
library. Koha contains many modules like:
Acquisitions -- Ordering, receiving and invoicing materials
Cataloging -- Classify and Index materials
Circulation -- Lending materials to patrons(users) and receiving them back
Patron management -- Manage registration and day to day interaction (fines, renewals
etc.) of users
Reports -- Provide statistical reports on the day to day functioning of the library.
Serials management -- Tracking magazine and newspaper holdings.
OPAC -- Online public access catalog.

We take the book and user data from the existing software and import them into Koha.
Koha uses standard library technologies like MARC21 so it is possible to import the
data from other software into Koha. Once all the existing data is imported into Koha
the library can function using Koha as the ILS.
